What is pes equinovarus congenitus?
10. June 2025
Perhaps you have already encountered this term at a doctor's office, in a pregnancy clinic, or this diagnosis directly affects you and your baby. PEC, the full name of Pes equinovarus congenitus, is a congenital leg defect that is sometimes also referred to as golf leg.
It is often an unexpected diagnosis for parents. But the good news is that today's medicine can deal with this defect very well - and that children with PEC can lead completely full, active lives without pain.
How do you recognize clubfoot?
A typical sign of PEC is that the leg is curled inwards and downwards. In practice, this means that the child cannot walk properly, and without treatment, he would face problems with walking and normal movement.
In most cases, the defect is already visible at birth. But it is often detected by prenatal screening during pregnancy**,** sometimes even in the first trimester. The defect can affect one leg or both - bilateral involvement is present in about 40% of cases.
Why does the "horse" leg defect occur?
The cause is not always clear. It is mostly a combination of different factors**. **Genetics play a big role, but other influences can also apply - for example, the position of the baby in the womb or developmental deviations during pregnancy.
The good news is that early diagnosis and targeted treatment lead to very promising outcomes in most cases.
How does PEC treatment work?
The most effective method of treatment today is the so-called Ponseti method. It is a gentle method that combines a gentle straightening of the leg, a series of casts and possibly a small outpatient procedure. Finally, the leg is fixed with a special splint that maintains its correct position.
This method is gentle, painless and very effective.
"The result of treatment with the Ponseti method is completely functional, painless feet that fit into normal shoes. In addition, thanks to early therapy, the child avoids possible permanent disability," explains MUDr. Michaela Kassaiová, who specializes in the treatment of children with this diagnosis at the Ponseti Clinic.
It is important to start Ponseti treatment as soon as possible
Time plays an important role. Treatment should begin as soon as possible after birth to be most effective. If the defect was already diagnosed during pregnancy, we will prepare a care plan together with you before the birth.
At Ponseti Clinic, we emphasize not only expertise, but also a human approach. We understand that this diagnosis affects the whole family - that's why we guide you safely through the entire treatment process. We will answer your questions and be there for you every step of the way.
