Combined occupational therapy and physiotherapy: Multidisciplinary rehabilitation for children
12. August 2025
In current child rehabilitation, it is confirmed that the most effective support for a child is provided by the connection of several expertises in real time - so-called multidisciplinary cooperation. Ponseti Clinic responds to this trend with a unique form of ergophysiotherapy. This is an intensive fifty-minute session, during which a physiotherapist and an occupational therapist work with the child patient simultaneously. This integrated approach makes it possible to create a comprehensive therapeutic plan that takes into account not only the condition of the musculoskeletal system, but also the child's ability to effectively participate in normal daily activities.
Methodology and course of the session
Unlike standard separate therapies, ergophysiotherapy takes place for the entire duration (50 minutes) with the active participation of both specialists. The examination and subsequent therapy take place in a natural environment, often in the form of a game, which minimizes the patient's stress and enables the manifestation of his natural movement patterns.
-
Role of a physiotherapist: Analyzes the musculoskeletal system in detail - posture, range of motion, muscle strength, coordination and balance. It tracks how these factors affect motor development and detects small deviations that could lead to future difficulties.
-
Role of an occupational therapist: Focuses on functional abilities in everyday life. It assesses fine motor skills, sensory processing of stimuli, level of independence and self-care. He looks for ways to practically use the child's movement skills in play or school performance.
Thanks to the fact that both therapists work with the child at the same time, there is an immediate sharing of insights. The result is a comprehensive view of the child's needs and the formulation of a uniform recommendation for the home and school environment, which is maximally comprehensible and easy to apply for parents.
Indications for ergophysiotherapy
This type of combined therapy is especially indicated for children with a combination of motor and sensory difficulties. It is suitable for diagnoses such as:
-
autism spectrum disorder (ASD),
-
cerebral palsy (CP),
-
dyspraxia (motor planning disorder),
-
ADHD and sensory dysfunction,
-
conditions after accidents or long-term hospitalization,
-
delayed motor development.
Parents can turn to us even without an established diagnosis if they observe difficulties in their child's normal motor activities or lagging behind in dexterity compared to their peers.
Practical impact and outputs
At the end of the session, parents receive a clear plan of further interventions and concrete tips for activities to support the child's potential in everyday life. Ergophysiotherapy at the Ponseti Clinic thus represents a modern, effective and expertly based approach that brings children greater confidence, functional independence and the joy of movement.
